SUMMARY:University of Louisville: Community - based Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Introductory Panel \nChange How You See\, See How You Change is a photography exhibition that redefines medicine as a deeply human experience. Created with local participants and University of Louisville health sciences students\, this portrait collection highlights the people behind the diagnoses—celebrating their joy\, strength\, and individuality. \nEach image tells a story\, reminding us that patients are more than their conditions—they are individuals with rich lives and identities. As you explore\, we invite you to reflect on the power of empathy in healthcare and the importance of truly seeing and understanding those we care for. \nIn partnership with POSITIVE EXPOSURE\, the University of Louisville Health Sciences Office of Health Equity and Engagement\, the KornhauserHealth Sciences Library\, and the School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics\, this exhibition underscores our shared human experiences.  \n

SUMMARY:SAL MARX: CHRONIC IS FOREVER
DESCRIPTION:CHRONIC IS FOREVER features a collection of paintings\, drawings\, wire sculpture\, and more\, alongside a visual storytelling series created with chronic illness communities. \nRSVP for the events below or contact events@positiveexposure.org to schedule a viewing. \nThursday\, October 29\, 5:30-7:30pm\nAn Evening of Art and Community Storytelling \nWednesday\, November 11\, 5:00-8:00pm\nOpening Celebration \nFriday\, November 13\, 4:00-6:00pm\nSal Marx and Dr. James George in Conversation \nTuesday\, November 17\, 6:00-8:00pm\nListening to Pain: A Storytelling Workshop for Members of the Medical Community \nSaturday\, November 21\, 3:00-5:00pm\nNarrating Pain with Visual Representation: A Storytelling Workshop for the Narrative Medicine and Health Humanities Community \nTuesday\, December 8\, 6:00-8:00pm\nYour Voice Made Visible: A Storytelling Workshop for the Patient Community \n \nArtist Statement \nAs with many people who have ever been asked the question\, Please Rate Your Pain on a Scale of 1-10: I know deeply the frustration and inadequacy of expressing one’s body/mind through the languages of boxes and binaries by way of numbers and words.  My artwork explores how invisible experiences can be transformed through visual mediums\, especially amidst reductive ways of thinking: sick/healthy\, man/woman\, visible/invisible. My complementary practices in graphic medicine\, and gender and disability justice are deeply connected to an urgency in image-making\, and to allow for unseen experiences to be brought to life and wrestled with. \nI work across multimedia as both a practical and creative choice. As a person with chronic illness\, my access needs change daily: jumping from acrylic to oil paint\, to wire sculpture and typewritten text allows me to start and stop in a medium and on a timeline that my body dictates. Moreover\, the limited color palette I work in mirrors the limitations that language offers for subject matter about pain and gender expression. I build visual constraints into my practice to allow for the act of creation itself to become expansive and liberatory. \nMy collaborative work combines oral history\, visual world-building\, and narrative medicine practices of co-authorship. Above all\, I aim to center patient voices and translate lived experiences as a means to restore agency that is far-too commonly erased in the medical industrial complex. \nBio\nSAL MARX is a visual artist\, creative director\, and chronic illness patient advocate based in Brooklyn\, NY.  They have a M.S. in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University\, where they completed a multimedia capstone exploring the intersection between visual co-creation and disability justice. They studied Public Policy\, Psychology\, and Media Studies at Pomona College.  Recently\, they were a panelist at the Graphic Medicine Conference at Johns Hopkins\, speaking about visual projects within chronic illness communities. They have conducted qualitative research culminating in A Graphic Guide to Palliative Care at the Vienna General Hospital\, which is now being adapted for pediatric palliative care use at Akron Children’s Hospital. Sal’s work has been shown in the Lied Art Gallery\, the Royal Alberta Museum\, and has been published on various platforms including Intima\, A Journal of Narrative Medicine; Johns Hopkins University Press\, and WebMD.   \nSal serves on the board of directors of Sick Futures Collective and the advocacy board of the Spondylitis Association of America.\n  \nImage Description: Positive Exposure Gallery poster with the text “SAL MARX: CHRONIC IS FOREVER” and an image of art featuring two skeletons sitting on a blue bench. The background is black and red\, with a white crescent moon\, and the foreground is golden yellow. The skeletons are drawn in a semi-abstract way\, in thick grey\, white\, black\, yellow\, and red marks. Their hands are holding at the center of the blue bench.

SUMMARY:Beyond Access: Disability\, Intimacy & Sexual Health
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Access: A candid conversation about disability\, intimacy\, sexuality & sexual health\, and exploring what it means to feel fully seen.\n\n\n\n\nAccess asks whether someone can participate. But moving beyond access means asking deeper questions: What matters to people? What helps them feel empowered\, connected\, and fulfilled?\nRSVP Here\n\n\n \n\nSexuality is more than physical function or healthcare access. It is part of being human\, shaped by our bodies\, identities\, relationships\, and lived experiences. Everyone deserves the dignity\, autonomy\, and support to define a fulfilling intimate life on their own terms.\n\n\n\nBeyond Access begins with an open house featuring community organizations working at the intersection of disability\, healthcare\, and sexual health. Explore resources\, ask questions\, and connect with representatives from In This Body Project\, STEPS2\, and NYU Langone’s Initiative for Women with Disabilities. More information about each organization can be found below. \nThe afternoon continues with a moderated conversation featuring Maya Moore\, a model\, writer\, content creator\, and disability advocate. Through fashion\, beauty\, and storytelling\, Maya challenges stereotypes about disability and advocates for greater representation and inclusion. Together\, we’ll explore disability and sexuality\, intimacy and relationships\, sexual health\, and how our bodies and identities shape the ways we connect with ourselves and others. \nThrough lived experience\, candid questions\, and perspectives from the disability community\, we’ll explore what it means to move beyond access alone. Because true inclusion means recognizing that intimacy and sexuality are deeply connected to autonomy\, connection\, pleasure\, and the ability to participate fully in life. \nCome curious. Come ready to listen. And come ready to talk about the things we don’t talk about enough. \nAdmission is free. If you’d like to support the Forum’s ongoing work\, please consider making a donation of $10–$15: Donate to the Forum. \n\n  \n\nAlt-Text: THE FORUM ON FEMALE SEXUAL MEDICINE INVITES YOU TO BEYOND ACCESS: DISABILITY\, INTIMACY AND SEXUAL HEALTH.
