SUMMARY:CDC: US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Virtual Presentation
DESCRIPTION:US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) \nThis year\, as we recognize the 33rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)\, CDC celebrates the significant advances the public health community has made to reduce health disparities and improve inclusion for the disability community. However\, there is still much work to do to ensure people with disabilities can access the same health care as people without disabilities and achieve positive health outcomes. \n\nCDC and Disability and Health\nEspañol (Spanish)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been involved in disability and health activities since 1988. CDC’s mission is to promote the health and full participation in society by people with disabilities across the lifespan. \nMonitoring the Health of People With and Without Disabilities\nCDC monitors the health of people with and without disabilities to identify how health issues affect people in different ways and why some people are at higher risk for certain diseases and conditions. Studies have shown that people with disabilities are more likely to have poorer overall health\, less access to adequate health care\, and increased risk for preventable health problems. These data are important to help identify barriers to achieving good health\, and to design prevention and health promotion programs aimed at reducing health disparities and improving the health of people with disabilities. \nPromoting Public Health\nCDC supports work that improves overall health and quality of life for people with disabilities. It supports the inclusion of people with disabilities in public health programs that prevent disease and promote healthy behaviors and safety\, while working to eliminate barriers to health care and improve access to routine preventive services.

SUMMARY:American Academy of Developmental Medicine & Dentistry (AADMD)\, Chicago
DESCRIPTION:“This is not a conference that simply highlights the health disparity people with IDD continue to experience – but it’s a place to discover and explore so that we\, as clinicians\, can ensure people with IDD get the best healthcare has to offer. ” \n\n\n\n\nOne Voice for Inclusive Health is AADMD’s annual educational conference\, held every year since 2002. We believe it takes one voice to make a difference and there’s one voice — the voice of a person with IDD — that needs to be heard. People with IDD experience a healthcare disparity in the US\, and through our annual training and partnerships\, we work to reverse that inequality. \n\nThe One Voice conference brings business leaders and IDD professionals together for education\, advocacy and to ignite change.\n\nDuring this conference\, attendees will hear from top keynote speakers\, meet companies and political leaders paving the way for inclusive health\, participate in topical panel discussions and breakout sessions\, earn Medical or Dental CE – not to mention network with top health professionals dedicated to the IDD population. \nWe invite you to join us in one voice – as a Sponsor\, Exhibitor or Attendee. \nLet’s ignite change together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is AADMD? \nAmerican Academy of Developmental Medicine & Dentistry (AADMD) is a non-profit organization of interdisciplinary medical professionals including physicians\, dentists\, optometrists\, neurologists and other clinicians committed to improving the quality of healthcare for people with IDD. \nSince 2002\, the AADMD has connected clinicians across the world and prepared them to face the unique challenges in caring for people with IDD. The organization provides curriculum to schools\, IDD training for clinicians and specialized information to families and caretakers in language that is easy to understand. Above all\, AADMD aims to make sure that no person with IDD is left without access to quality health services. \nThey are difference makers for people with IDD.

SUMMARY:ART HEALS Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of ART HEALS\, an exhibition of paintings by Dr. James E. George\, MD\, JD. \nDr. James E. George is a highly accomplished doctor and lawyer who experienced a brain and spinal cord injury after a fall in his home\, resulting in a coma and quadriplegia. He spent six months in rehab\, where he discovered great joy and healing in creating art. \n \n\n  \nJames E. George\, MD\, JD: \nI have been involved in emergency medicine for nearly 50 years of my life\, but healthcare wasn’t my only interest. I studied medicine and law simultaneously and served as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves Medical Corps. \nAfter receiving my undergraduate degree from Columbia University\, I simultaneously enrolled in the University of Louisville Medical School and Law School. Attending medical school during the day and law school at night\, I completed the programs in four years\, receiving both degrees – with honors – in 1970. \nOne of my proudest accomplishments in the field of emergency medicine was being an early adopter of emergency medicine as a specialty. I served on the Board of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)\, and I am a past member of several professional organizations for physicians and attorneys. I authored several books on the topic as well. \nI am a founding member of TeamHealth\, an association of more than 20\,000 clinicians throughout the United States. I served as a division president for the TeamHealth East region until 2014 when I made the transition to the position of Strategic Advisor to the CEO of TeamHealth. I was also a founding member of George & Korin\, a healthcare law firm representing physicians\, nurses\, and other healthcare providers. \nIn 2016\, I suffered a brain and spinal cord injury after a fall in my home\, resulting in a coma and quadriplegia. I spent six months at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia\, where I discovered great joy in art therapy and painting – ultimately contributing several pieces of my artwork now on display throughout the hospital.  \nFollowing my partial recovery and diminished use of my dominant right hand\, I received the Adam Taliaferro Foundation Award and accepted it by standing in public for the first time since my injury. Today\, I am living a full life\, enjoying my art and painting and spending time with family and friends. I hope you enjoy my paintings as well. I draw special pleasure from comments made by patients\, their families\, and others who enjoy my art. \nImage Description: On a black background is the following text\, in white: “POSITIVE EXPOSURE GALLERY ART HEALS James E. George\, MD\, JD. OPENING CELEBRATION Saturday\, June 1\, 2-5pm. 14 East 109th Street\, NYC. On View: June 1-30\, 2024. Contact: 212-420-1931.” At bottom left is the NYSCA logo. At center is an abstract painting with swirling golden yellow lines embellished with a few red lines and bright green dots on a dark grey background.

SUMMARY:Please Hold by Alexandra Juhasz: Experimental Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:Image Descriptions: \nOn two square graphics with pale blue backgrounds are two images. The first is a rectangular image of a gallery wall in deep red light\, overlaid with the text “Please Hold\, A Video by Alexandra Juhasz.” The second is a grid showing four people. Clockwise from top-left: the side view of a person looking downward near a street full of parked cars. Next\, a person staring into a camera\, wearing a green collared shirt. Beneath\, someone sitting in front of rows of books with their arm making a gesture of some kind. Lastly\, someone lying in a hospital bed\, looking away from the camera. Overlaid is the following text: “That’s where the political analysis is.”\nThe two square graphics include all of the following details: “POSITIVE EXPOSURE GALLERY. Please Hold\, 70 mins\, 2024 by Alexandra Juhasz. Friends and Family Screening. Sunday\, April 21\, 3-5pm. Please join us for a sneak preview of a just-finished experimental documentary\, Please Hold\, featuring Juanita Mohammed Szczepanski and members of her family\, including her husband Henry Szczepanski\, daughter Jahanara Zzaman King\, and granddaughter Pharah Diaz. \nThe tape asks: What does it mean to hold the legacy of beloveds on changing formats of memory? How do mourning\, haunting\, and memory change across time? How have AIDS and AIDS activism changed since the dawn of this ongoing pandemic? Alex and Juanita met in 1990 to make the celebrated collective AIDS activist video\, We Care: A Video for Care Providers of People Affected by AIDS\, and went on to collaborate for decades on many activist media projects\, including this one.\nAlexandra Juhasz\, Juanita’s family members\, and others will be present to discuss this haunting\, sometimes sad\, and often hopeful personal documentary about how we collaborate with fellow activists in life and also in death.\nThe film screening will be held alongside an exhibit of Henry’s work as a photographer and writer\, as well as the work of his wife\, Juanita\, who was a filmmaker and an AIDS activist.\nAlexandra Juhasz is a Distinguished Professor of Film at Brooklyn College\, CUNY and a lifelong AIDS activist. Juanita Mohammed Szczepanski (1957-2022) was a prolific activist videomaker whose work focused on AIDS\, disability\, racism\, and gender.”

Rick has spent more than twenty-five years collaborating with advocacy organizations to effect change in societal attitudes towards individuals living with genetic\, physical\, behavioral or intellectual differences by replacing dehumanizing representations with positive images. \n\n\nWhat’s your thing? is presented in collaboration with Precision Medicine in Autism (PRISMA) and features participants from Rhode Island and Edmonton\, Canada. PRISMA is a multidisciplinary effort based at the University of Alberta that seeks to understand the unique and diverse worlds of people on the autism spectrum and support their health through genomics across research\, clinical care\, education\, and community engagement. \nA family/friends reception is planned at the exhibit for \nSaturday\, April 20th from 2-4pm.   \nPlease RSVP with names of people planning to attend.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMuseum of Work and Culture\n42 South Main Street\nWoonsocket\, RI 02895\n\nsecond floor\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage Description: Postcard: Assorted portraits against a black background. \n\n\n\n\nThroughout our work we honor and celebrate each person’s uniqueness as we learn about their specific interests and passions\, their “things”\, which has now become the basis of our campaign #whatsyourthing. We all have our “things”; we invite you to reflect on your own interests and passions\, focusing on how the universality of the emotions that come up brings us all together beyond the constraints of any diagnoses. \n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n
