SUMMARY:ReNU Syndrome United Conference: Uniondale\, NY
DESCRIPTION:Presentation and Photography: Long Island Marriott\, Uniondale\, NY \nIn the Press: ReNU Washington Post Cover Story Unique_Autumn2024MagazineNo100_RNU4-2 \nWhat Do We Know About ReNU Syndrome?\nRNU4-2 / ReNU Syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by variants in the RNU4-2 gene. \nVariants in the RNU4-2 gene\, a non-coding gene responsible for producing U4 snRNA\, have been identified as a significant cause of previously undiagnosed neurodevelopmental disorders. These variants\, particularly the insertion of a T between positions 64 and 65 of the gene\, disrupt the RNA splicing process\, causing errors in how RNA is processed and leading to improper protein synthesis. This exciting discovery highlights the importance of whole-genome sequencing\, as traditional exome sequencing often overlooks non-coding genes like RNU4-2. \nThe name “ReNU” was given by families and researchers to symbolize the “renewed hope” for a better future for those affected. This diagnosis opens avenues for future research and potential treatments for those affected\, and aids in the understanding that there wasn’t anything parents did prior to or during pregnancy to cause the disorder. \nReNU Syndrome is currently characterized by hypotonia\, global developmental delay\, severely impaired intellectual development with poor or absent speech\, delayed walking or inability to walk\, feeding difficulties with poor overall growth\, seizures (in most)\, dysmorphic facial features\, and brain anomalies\, including ventriculomegaly\, thin corpus callosum\, and white matter loss (Greene et al.\, 2024; Schot et al.\, 2024; Chen et al.\, 2024).

SUMMARY:Moebius Syndrome Family Conference: Salt Lake City\, UT
DESCRIPTION:Presentation and Photography: Salt Lake City\, UT \nWhat Is Moebius Syndrome?\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a very simple explanation\, Moebius syndrome is a form of facial paralysis combined with outward\, to the side\, eye paralysis. Individuals with Moebius syndrome typically cannot make facial expressions\, such as smiling\, frowning\, squinting\, or blinking. Speech\, eating\, and lip movement may also be affected. People with Moebius syndrome also cannot move their eyes out to the side\, as you would if you were looking over your shoulder without turning your head. The syndrome has a wide range of presentations and may occur on one or both sides of the face.

SUMMARY:How Do You Wear? by Sydney Keller
DESCRIPTION:How Do You Wear?\nBy Sydney Keller\nA mixed-media textile installation that explores how clothing bears the marks of disabled life.\nOn view through October 1\, 2025\nPlease contact events@positiveexposure.org to schedule a visit\n \n“How Do You Wear? is a mixed-media textile installation that explores how clothing bears the marks of disabled life. For many physically disabled individuals\, myself included\, garments often degrade in predictable ways: forearm fabric thinning from crutch use\, elbows rubbing on wheels\, seams tearing\, fabrics pilling and shredding in irregular patterns. This project reframes that inevitable wear as evidence of interaction\, resilience\, and storytelling rather than frustration or failure.”\nSydney Keller is a designer and researcher exploring the relationship between materials and disabled bodies\, revealing wear as a form of visual storytelling.\nSydney graduated from Wesleyan University in May 2025 with a self-designed major in Computational Design\, an interdisciplinary program bridging computer science\, computational fabrication methods\, and design. Her senior thesis applied these interests to her unique story\, exploring the disabled experience through both personal and collaborative lenses. By critically examining the medical and social models of disability\, Sydney addresses assumptions around normalcy and the body. Themes of emotional labor\, microaggressions\, adaptive tools as apparel\, and the compounding effects of those experiences over time are also made evident and contended with.\nBased in Boston\, Sydney is currently working on the material development team at New Balance. She hopes to continue building on her thesis work by improving the accessibility of the systems\, products\, and environments we interact with daily through co-design\, material innovation\, and a belief that wear is worth noticing.\nImage Description: On a nave blue background is a photograph of a room in which black\, white\, navy\, and blue shirts and sweaters are suspended from the ceiling. Three semi-transparent statues of people standing and sitting in a wheelchair are placed among the garments in the room\, which is made of stone. Surrounding the image is the following text: “POSITIVE EXPOSURE GALLERY. HOW DO YOU WEAR? SYDNEY KELLER. A mixed-media textile installation that explores how clothing bears the marks of disabled life. Opening Friday\, September 5\, 5-8pm. On view through October 1\, 2025. 83 Maiden Lane\, 4th Floor.
