SUMMARY:Please Hold by Alexandra Juhasz: Experimental Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:Image Descriptions: \nOn two square graphics with pale blue backgrounds are two images. The first is a rectangular image of a gallery wall in deep red light\, overlaid with the text “Please Hold\, A Video by Alexandra Juhasz.” The second is a grid showing four people. Clockwise from top-left: the side view of a person looking downward near a street full of parked cars. Next\, a person staring into a camera\, wearing a green collared shirt. Beneath\, someone sitting in front of rows of books with their arm making a gesture of some kind. Lastly\, someone lying in a hospital bed\, looking away from the camera. Overlaid is the following text: “That’s where the political analysis is.”\nThe two square graphics include all of the following details: “POSITIVE EXPOSURE GALLERY. Please Hold\, 70 mins\, 2024 by Alexandra Juhasz. Friends and Family Screening. Sunday\, April 21\, 3-5pm. Please join us for a sneak preview of a just-finished experimental documentary\, Please Hold\, featuring Juanita Mohammed Szczepanski and members of her family\, including her husband Henry Szczepanski\, daughter Jahanara Zzaman King\, and granddaughter Pharah Diaz. \nThe tape asks: What does it mean to hold the legacy of beloveds on changing formats of memory? How do mourning\, haunting\, and memory change across time? How have AIDS and AIDS activism changed since the dawn of this ongoing pandemic? Alex and Juanita met in 1990 to make the celebrated collective AIDS activist video\, We Care: A Video for Care Providers of People Affected by AIDS\, and went on to collaborate for decades on many activist media projects\, including this one.\nAlexandra Juhasz\, Juanita’s family members\, and others will be present to discuss this haunting\, sometimes sad\, and often hopeful personal documentary about how we collaborate with fellow activists in life and also in death.\nThe film screening will be held alongside an exhibit of Henry’s work as a photographer and writer\, as well as the work of his wife\, Juanita\, who was a filmmaker and an AIDS activist.\nAlexandra Juhasz is a Distinguished Professor of Film at Brooklyn College\, CUNY and a lifelong AIDS activist. Juanita Mohammed Szczepanski (1957-2022) was a prolific activist videomaker whose work focused on AIDS\, disability\, racism\, and gender.”

SUMMARY:Uniformed Services University
DESCRIPTION:A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO HEALTH PROFESSIONS EDUCATION\nUniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) is the nation’s federal health professions academy — akin to the undergraduate programs of the U.S. military academies at West Point\, Annapolis and Colorado Springs. Like the academies\, students are not charged tuition; they repay the nation for their education through service. In many respects\, our curricula and educational experiences are similar to those of civilian academic health centers\, with one important difference: our emphasis on military health care\, leadership\, readiness and public health sets USU apart. \nPositive Exposure Lecture: 14th presentation

SUMMARY:PETER SONENSHEIN: BEHIND THE CURTAIN Gallery Opening Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Rare Disease Month\, we are proud to announce our February exhibition featuring the work of Peter Sonenshein\, a Philadelphia artist living with familial dysautonomia. \nOn Thursday\, February 1st\, from 6-8pm\, join us in celebration of Peter’s “Visions from behind the Curtain\,” a body of work made\, in part\, behind the hospital curtain. \n \nPeter Sonenshein\, born in 1984\, has lived his entire life with familial dysautonomia (FD). FD is a rare neurological condition that causes Peter physical and psychological suffering\, but also gives a unique expression to his work. Painting and drawing help Peter to deal with the uncertainty and anxiety caused by FD. \nPeter has lived in suburban Philadelphia all his life. The seeds for his interest in art were sown as a student in a progressive elementary school where he was exposed to a variety of art classes. In 2012\, Peter began private art lessons at The Oasis Art Center in Philadelphia. \nBeside discovering a talent for and a joy in painting\, he found that the sense of community helped to alleviate some of the isolation that resulted from his illness. Peter considers himself a fighter who never gives up when unpredictable bouts of illness strike. He enjoys the sense of accomplishment in completing each piece of art. \nPlease RSVP at the “Register” button above. We look forward to seeing you at our gallery in celebration of Pete’s extraordinary work! \n14 East 109th Street\, NYC. \nTo learn more about familial dysautonomia\, click here to watch our FRAME film. \nFeatured Image Details \nTitle: “The Spiketator\,” 2022 \nMedia: Oil pastel on paper \nSize: 12″ x 16″ \nThis piece features a moment in basketball history during which a potentially important shot is being taken\, but the image hones in not on the unnamed player or even the game\, but the famous spectator in the audience (Spike Lee). \nPeter has an interest in the awkward and/or underdog moments in sports\, and this image has particular resonance with him as his own role of spectator in most sports due to his illness inhibiting participation. \nImage Description: On a light blue background with purple\, red\, and dark blue accents is the following text: POSITIVE EXPOSURE GALLERY\, In Honor of Rare Disease Month We are Proud to Present PETER SONENSHEIN VISIONS FROM BEHIND THE CURTAIN. NEW YORK STATE OF OPPORTUNITY Council on the Arts. IN COLLABORATION WITH THE FAMILIAL DYSAUTONOMIA FOUNDATION. OPENING CELEBRATION Thursday\, February 1\, 6-8pm. 14 E. 109th Street\, New York\, NY. Viewings by appointment through February 29\, 2024. Contact 212-420-1931 or events@positiveexposure.org. On top of the text is an image of a bright\, colorful drawing of spectators watching basketball.

DESCRIPTION:In honor of Rare Disease Month\, we are proud to announce our February exhibition featuring the work of Peter Sonenshein\, a Philadelphia artist living with familial dysautonomia. \nOn Thursday\, February 1st\, tune in at 6:00PM EST in celebration of Peter’s “VISIONS FROM BEHIND THE CURTAIN\,” a body of work made\, in part\, behind the hospital curtain. \nPlease register to receive the Zoom link! Beside discovering a talent for and a joy in painting\, he found that the sense of community helped to alleviate some of the isolation that resulted from his illness. Peter considers himself a fighter who never gives up when unpredictable bouts of illness strike. He enjoys the sense of accomplishment in completing each piece of art. \nPlease RSVP at the “Register” button above. We look forward to seeing you in celebration of Pete’s extraordinary work! \nTo learn more about familial dysautonomia\, click here to watch our FRAME film. \n  \nFeatured Image Details \nTitle: “The Spiketator\,” 2022 \nMedia: Oil pastel on paper \nSize: 12″ x 16″ \nThis piece features a moment in basketball history during which a potentially important shot is being taken\, but the image hones in not on the unnamed player or even the game\, but the famous spectator in the audience (Spike Lee). \nPeter has an interest in the awkward and/or underdog moments in sports\, and this image has particular resonance with him as his own role of spectator in most sports due to his illness inhibiting participation. \n\nImage Description: On a light blue background with purple\, red\, and dark blue accents is the following text: POSITIVE EXPOSURE GALLERY\, In Honor of Rare Disease Month We are Proud to Present PETER SONENSHEIN VISIONS FROM BEHIND THE CURTAIN. SUMMARY:A Portrait of Medical Humanities: Opening Celebration
DESCRIPTION:POSITIVE EXPOSURE GALLERY\, NYC \nDECEMBER 2023 ~ JANUARY 2024 \nOPENING CELEBRATION: SATURDAY\, DECEMBER 16\, 2023\, 2-6pm \nThis exhibition is a continuation of the collaboration between Positive Exposure and Creighton University. In February 2023\, Positive Exposure exhibited the Many Faces of Neurofibromatosis. These portraits were created by Rachel Mindrup\, MFA\, Associate Professor and Richard L. Deming\, MD Endowed Chair in Medical Humanities at Creighton University. In May\, Rick Guidotti traveled to Omaha to spend time taking portraits of Nebraskans living with various genetic disorders. Some of the photos from his exhibition held at Creighton’s Lied Art Gallery\, “Change How You See\, See How You Change” are on display at this exhibition. \nThe students at Creighton University responded to Rick’s work and created some of their own interpretations from personal experiences. This exhibition is a collection of work by Creighton University School of Medicine students (Omaha and Phoenix campuses)\, Creighton University School of Dentistry and Creighton University College of Arts and Sciences. The bridge between art and medicine is central to the theme of the exhibition and central to the development of caring and empathetic physicians at Creighton University. We hope our future physicians and healthcare workers will always remember the humanity behind the medicine. \nExhibition made possible by the Richard L.
