SUMMARY:United Hands: Health Equity Listening Sessions
DESCRIPTION:The Health Equity Listening Sessions will be a full-day\, community-centered engagement event designed to bring together Deaf\, DeafBlind\, Late-Deafened\, Hard of Hearing\, and other individuals with communication access needs to share their lived experiences directly with representatives from the New York State Department of Health\, state and local government agencies\, healthcare organizations\, managed care plans\, and community partners. The purpose of the event is to identify barriers to equitable healthcare access\, gather community-driven recommendations\, and strengthen collaboration between policymakers\, healthcare leaders\, and the communities they serve. Rather than a traditional conference\, the event is designed as an interactive listening and co-design experience where government agencies listen first and community members lead the conversation \nMission: United Hands Organization (UHO) is an ASL-led nonprofit building accessible systems through universal design\, communication access\, workforce development\, and integrated care. We partner with healthcare providers\, government agencies\, employers\, and community organizations to eliminate communication barriers and improve equitable access to health\, social\, employment\, and community services for Deaf\, DeafBlind\, Hard of Hearing\, Limited English Proficient (LEP)\, and other underserved communities. By combining lived experience\, innovation\, technology\, and trusted community partnerships\, we transform fragmented services into inclusive\, person-centered solutions that improve outcomes for everyone.

SUMMARY:Intertwine Arts presents WOVEN TOGETHER: TOUCH
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US ON THURSDAY\, SEPTEMBER 10TH\, 5-8PM: Intertwine Arts’ Woven Together Community Exhibition – a celebration of connection\, creativity\, and the many stories woven through fiber.\n“In 2026\, we explore the theme Touch. Touch is a powerful form of communication\, connection\, and understanding. It is a way we experience the world\, share emotions\, and build relationships\, often beyond the boundaries of spoken language. \nFor many people\, touch is central to how they navigate and interpret their surroundings. People who are blind or visually impaired may experience art through texture\, shape\, temperature\, and material. \nMany autistic individuals and people with sensory differences experience touch in unique and varied ways—finding comfort\, connection\, creativity\, or even challenges through different textures and sensations. For people with disabilities\, touch can be a pathway to independence\, expression\, accessibility\, and belonging. \nThrough fiber art\, touch becomes both the process and the message. The softness of a material\, the structure of a weave\, the repetition of a stitch\, or the presence of a handmade object can invite reflection on how we connect with ourselves and each other.” \nRegister for All Events

SUMMARY:Disposable Humanity: Film Screening and Q&A

Disposable Humanity uncovers this largely forgotten history through a 25-year investigation by the Mitchell family.\n\nOn Friday\, September 4th at 4pm\, join us at the gallery for a screening and live Q&A\, or tune-in online for the global online premiere.\nThe Q&A will be moderated by NYU Professor of Anthropology\, Dr. Faye Ginsburg\, and paneled by the director Cameron S. Through conversations with memorial directors\, disabled people\, and relatives of T4 victims they uncover the horrifying truth: that the Nazi Aktion T4 program\, was in fact the program where the Nazis trained killing staff and designed the apparatus of mass murder that led to the Holocaust. SUMMARY:WOVEN TOGETHER: TOUCH Narrative Weaving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Weaving as Narrative: Responding Through Color\, Texture & Form\nRSVP HERE\n\n\n\nWhat if you responded to a story with color and fiber instead of words? Join us for a hands-on workshop blending Narrative Medicine with free-form weaving. We’ll read a short piece together\, then you’ll respond on a handheld loom with a wide range of yarns and textures.\nGuided by a prompt\, you’ll have 20–30 minutes to create freely\, exploring an emotion\, memory\, or image\, and letting fiber become the language of response. We’ll close with time to reflect and optionally share what emerged.\n  \n \n  \nNarrative Medicine is an interdisciplinary practice that draws upon the humanities\, creative arts\, and clinical practice to deepen our capacity to listen\, observe\, reflect\, and understand the experiences of others.\nIntertwine Arts similarly recognizes the power of creative expression\, using free-form weaving to inspire creativity\, joy\, connection\, and self-confidence among people of all ages with disabilities and chronic illness.\nThis evening of weaving and reflection brings these practices together\, inviting participants to slow down\, pay attention\, and respond—not necessarily by finding the “right” answer\, but by noticing what arises.\nThis workshop is for participants with prior weaving experience (no advanced skill required). All materials provided.\n\n\n\n \nAbout Ria \n\n\n\nPrior to her full-time devotion to Intertwine Arts\, Ria was a pediatric nurse practitioner at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of NY Presbyterian\, Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). Her focus was providing palliative and curative care for children with cancer and life-threatening hematological diseases. Throughout her career\, she has been an advocate for integrative therapies\, including interventions that promote healing. \nRia recognized that weaving could decrease stress and anxiety as well as enhance self-expression and coping skills. She established a weaving program\, which was adaptable to different developmental\, physical\, and emotional needs\, in the pediatric hematology/oncology clinic at CUMC. As an adjunct professor at Bank Street Graduate School of Education\, Ria shares her expertise with child life students. She also volunteers in the Arts in Medicine Studio\, in the Pediatric Neurology Clinic at CUMC. She is the co-founder and Board President of Intertwine Arts. \n \nAbout Liz \n\n\nLiz Matejka-Grossman has dedicated her career to advancing equity for under-resourced and marginalized communities through education. While teaching high school English and ESL in New York City public schools\, she created wraparound programs to support at-risk students and their families. She also established Literacy AmeriCorps in Palm Beach County as a project of the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County to combat high rates of illiteracy\, address the needs of young and adult learners\, and provide meaningful service and professional development opportunities for AmeriCorps members. \nThe birth of her first child in 1999\, who has the chromosomal anomaly 18q- syndrome\, catapulted Liz into accessibility education and deepened her lifelong commitment to inclusion. A professional dancer\, she trained at England’s Royal Ballet School before earning her BA from the University of Michigan and graduate degrees from Teachers College\, Columbia University\, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She later co-founded Sharing the Arts\, a nonprofit that enhances the lives of individuals with disabilities and diverse ways of being through inclusive performing arts opportunities.

SUMMARY:Don't Look Away: Film Screening & Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker and a workshop about coming to terms with a facial difference. All are welcome!\nSynopsis: Born with a rare condition requiring over 50 cranial reconstructive surgeries\, 36-year-old Corey searches for normalcy\, love\, and acceptance in a swipe-left\, swipe-right world. The film explores how his looks affect his ability to live a “normal life” and challenges viewers to question who misses out when we reject those who look different. \nWatch the Trailer here. \nWhat’s next for the film: https://www.documentaries.org/films/dont-look-away/ \nAbout the filmmaker: Joseph V. Lingad started his career as a camera assistant on TV shows\, commercials\, and narrative films in 2008. He got his break in journalism in 2011 when he was hired as a videographer and editor by The Wall Street Journal. He worked with its sister companies\, MarketWatch and Barron’s\, as a video journalist for six years\, developing various news stories from income inequality to the student loan crisis to America’s epidemic of loneliness.  Joseph gravitates to stories about social and socioeconomic issues and corporate accountability. \nAfter over a decade working in a newsroom\, Joseph returned to school in 2022 to obtain a master’s in business and economics reporting\, specializing in documentary. While at school\, Joseph developed a short version of “Don’t Look Away” as his Capstone project under the guidance of award-winning filmmakers Yoruba Richen\, Judith Helfand\, Sabrina Gordon\, and others.Joseph is now working on his first feature-length documentary\, “Don’t Look Away\,” which includes his story of his struggle living with a facial difference. Unlike the short version\, the full-length documentary is about how a community helps each other come to terms with their facial difference in a society that is sometimes hostile to those who look different. He hopes to have a final cut by 2028.

SUMMARY:Book Talk with Avra Wing — Stride: How I Walked Away from Trauma Toward Healing
DESCRIPTION:Stride: How I Walked Away from Trauma Toward Healing\nReading and Discussion with Avra Wing\n \nStride: How I Walked Away from Trauma Toward Healing\nA Memoir of Survival\, Love and Healing\nIn her powerful and moving memoir\, Stride: How I Walked Away from Trauma Toward Healing\, novelist Avra Wing tells the story of the moment her life was irrevocably altered—and the courageous journey that followed.\nOn a quiet day in Park Slope\, Brooklyn\, an out-of-control car jumped the curb and struck Wing as she strolled with her three-year-old son\, Eli. In a split second\, she shielded her child from harm\, saving his life. Wing’s own injuries\, however\, were catastrophic: her right leg required amputation above her knee\, and she spent weeks recovering at Bellevue Hospital and then months relearning how to walk at Rusk Institute.\nAt the time\, Wing was a rising literary voice. Her debut novel\, Angie\, had been adapted into a feature film starring Geena Davis and James Gandolfini. After the accident\, everything changed. In the early days of recovery\, she questioned whether she wanted to go on at all\, veering from despair to denial of her changed body. But she was sustained by the fierce love of her husband and their two sons\, and the community she found at Rusk Institute.\nIn Stride\, Wing writes with great honesty about trauma\, identity\, and the long path toward self- acceptance: “Right after my accident\,” she writes\, “I was not thinking about what it meant to be disabled. I was focused on being disfigured … I saw my injury as a manifestation of something interior that was ‘off\,’ wrong\, ugly—a feeling I have had since childhood.”\nYet Stride is also a story of strength passed across generations. Wing recalls her beloved grandmother\, who lost her sight to glaucoma yet lived with independence and dignity after emigrating from Belarus. As a child\, Wing never thought of her as limited: “She was proud\, intelligent\, capable\, caring . . . In fact\, when I was little\, I thought all grandmothers were blind.”\nIn Stride\, Wing shows how she struggled to parent her two young sons and the decision to adopt a child from China years later. Ultimately family love sustained her as did community and creativity.\nFor more than a decade\, Wing has led a writing workshop at Center for Independence of the Disabled in New York City\, where participants with a wide range of disabilities create expressive work each week. Through these connections—and through unexpected sources of joy\, like Zumba classes offered by NYU Langone Health’s Initiative for Women with Disabilities—she began to recognize her body not as broken\, but as capable of movement and expression. Stride is a testament to the human capacity to endure pain and find meaning after terrible loss.\n  \nAbout the Author \nAvra Wing is a novelist and teacher whose debut novel\, Angie\, was adapted into a feature film starring Geena Davis and James Gandolfini. She has led writing workshops for people with disabilities since 2009 and is a passionate advocate for creative expression as a path to healing. She has three adult children and lives with her husband and cats in Brooklyn. \n \nADVANCE PRAISE \n“Drawing on witness accounts\, police records\, and medical files in addition to Wing’s own memories\, this account of the accident\, the surgery\, and the recovery period is visceral and comprehensive. Psychiatric insights are also used to articulate the extended psychological trauma of losing a limb and Wing’s feelings of shame and disfigurement. The self-aware prose untangles months of denial without sentimentality.” —Michele Sharpe\, Foreword Reviews \n“Stride is a thoughtful and candid memoir that examines the aftermath of a sudden\, life-altering injury. Avra Wing resists a conventional ‘overcoming adversity’ narrative . . . Her reflections on embodiment\, identity\, and visibility are particularly compelling . . . a reflective and engaging read\, especially for those interested in the lived experience of illness and recovery.” —Dr. Rana Awdish\, bestselling author of In Shock: My Journey from Death to Recovery and the Redemptive Power of Hope and the forthcoming After Shock. \n“Stride is . . . layered with hard-won insight\, grace\, and wisdom for the ages—and for the moments right in front of us. . . . Her voice is so engaging that you feel that if you met her\, you could pick up the conversation she has with herself and the reader and talk long into the night.” —Elizabeth Benedict\, author of Rewriting Illness: A View of My Own
