SUMMARY:American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
DESCRIPTION:AACAP October 23-28 2023 NYC American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry New York Hilton Midtown \nPanel Discussion and Photo Exhibit \nAbout the Panel \nDescription\nThe goal of this year’s James C. Harris\, MD\, Developmental Neuropsychiatry Forum is to highlight the theme of diversity and inclusion among children with neurodevelopmental and genetic syndromes. The two talks in this year’s forum approach this topic in different ways. The first talk is a multimedia presentation given by an award-winning photographer who illustrates the spirit of difference amongst children with genetic\, intellectual\, and behavioral differences. The second talk is given by an internationally renowned researcher who discusses mechanistic and treatment discovery in one specific genetic disorder\, Fragile X\, using precision medicine approaches. The two talks collectively highlight themes of heterogeneity in genetic and clinical presentations\, societal acceptance and advocacy\, and the importance of celebrating each individual as a unique and valued member of our society. \nThe first speaker\, Mr. Rick Guidotti\, is an award-winning international photographer\, whose career initially began in the fashion industry where he worked for many high-profile companies around the globe. Mr. Guidotti’ s career focus expanded in 1997\, after a chance encounter with a young lady living with albinism at a bus stop in New York City. After seeking out medical textbooks\, he was affronted by the dehumanizing images depicting medical conditions. It was this experience which forced Rick to turn his lens from the more traditional ideas of beauty to the beauty and richness of human diversity. Mr. Guidotti subsequently founded POSITIVE EXPOSURE\, a non-profit organization that promotes a more inclusive world through award-winning photography. He has since spent more than 25 years collaborating internationally with advocacy organizations/NGOs\, medical schools\, universities\, and other educational institutions to effect a change in societal attitudes towards individuals living with genetic\, physical\, behavioral or intellectual differences. \nOur second speaker\, Craig Erickson\, MD\, is a child psychiatrist and neuroscientist who specializes in the translational treatment development in neurodevelopmental disorders including primary work in Fragile X syndrome and autism. He is a professor at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He has established a world-class translational research program in neurodevelopmental disorders. He serves as the director of research at the Kelly O’Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders and of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry both at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He has a successful track record of grant funding\, an uncanny ability to develop and lead innovative projects\, and has contributed to over 100 peer reviewed articles. He holds over 10 patents within the area of therapeutic development in neurodevelopmental disorders. At the heart\, Dr. Erickson is also a clinician and tireless advocate for his patients and their families having been recognized for his efforts through the CCHMC Making a Difference Award and the National Fragile X Foundation Clinical Award. \nSponsored by AACAP’s Autism and Intellectual Disability Committee and supported by James C. Harris\, MD\, and Catherine DeAngelis\, MD\, MPH

As an artist\, Rick was taken by her extraordinary beauty. In a quest for a better understanding of albinism\, Rick sought out medical textbooks\, where he was affronted by the dehumanizing images depicting disease\, lacking all humanity. It was this experience which forced Rick to turn his lens from the more traditional ideas of beauty\, to the beauty and richness of human diversity. Rick has since spent more than twenty years collaborating internationally with advocacy organizations/NGOs\, medical schools\, universities\, and other educational institutions to effect a sea-change in societal attitudes towards individuals living with genetic\, physical\, behavioral or intellectual difference. \n  \nClinical Conference Registration Brochure

SUMMARY:PETER SONENSHEIN: BEHIND THE CURTAIN Gallery Opening **Virtual Attendance**
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Rare Disease Month\, we are proud to announce our February exhibition featuring the work of Peter Sonenshein\, a Philadelphia artist living with familial dysautonomia. \nOn Thursday\, February 1st\, tune in at 6:00PM EST in celebration of Peter’s “VISIONS FROM BEHIND THE CURTAIN\,” a body of work made\, in part\, behind the hospital curtain. \nPlease register to receive the Zoom link! \n \nPeter Sonenshein\, born in 1984\, has lived his entire life with familial dysautonomia (FD). FD is a rare neurological condition that causes Peter physical and psychological suffering\, but also gives a unique expression to his work. Painting and drawing help Peter to deal with the uncertainty and anxiety caused by FD. \nPeter has lived in suburban Philadelphia all his life. The seeds for his interest in art were sown as a student in a progressive elementary school where he was exposed to a variety of art classes. In 2012\, Peter began private art lessons at The Oasis Art Center in Philadelphia. Beside discovering a talent for and a joy in painting\, he found that the sense of community helped to alleviate some of the isolation that resulted from his illness. Peter considers himself a fighter who never gives up when unpredictable bouts of illness strike. He enjoys the sense of accomplishment in completing each piece of art. \nPlease RSVP at the “Register” button above. We look forward to seeing you in celebration of Pete’s extraordinary work! \nTo learn more about familial dysautonomia\, click here to watch our FRAME film. \n  \nFeatured Image Details \nTitle: “The Spiketator\,” 2022 \nMedia: Oil pastel on paper \nSize: 12″ x 16″ \nThis piece features a moment in basketball history during which a potentially important shot is being taken\, but the image hones in not on the unnamed player or even the game\, but the famous spectator in the audience (Spike Lee). \nPeter has an interest in the awkward and/or underdog moments in sports\, and this image has particular resonance with him as his own role of spectator in most sports due to his illness inhibiting participation. \n\nImage Description: On a light blue background with purple\, red\, and dark blue accents is the following text: POSITIVE EXPOSURE GALLERY\, In Honor of Rare Disease Month We are Proud to Present PETER SONENSHEIN VISIONS FROM BEHIND THE CURTAIN. NEW YORK STATE OF OPPORTUNITY Council on the Arts. IN COLLABORATION WITH THE FAMILIAL DYSAUTONOMIA FOUNDATION. OPENING CELEBRATION Thursday\, February 1\, 6-8pm. 14 E. 109th Street\, New York\, NY. Viewings by appointment through February 29\, 2024. Contact 212-420-1931 or events@positiveexposure.org.
