SUMMARY:NYU: Faculty Development Program
DESCRIPTION:Positive Exposure/ Rick Guidotti will present during this session: \nThis lecture will create opportunities to hear from and explore the experiences of people living with a variety of genetic\, physical\, behavioral\, and intellectual differences. The lecture will provide a “lens” into various genetic conditions and give a “voice” to those featured in the photographs and their respective families.  The NYU Community will be able to hear from individuals and their families living with genetic conditions through innovative multimedia tools developed by Positive Exposure. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe the social and psychological experiences of people of all ages and ethno-cultural heritages living with genetic\, physical\, behavioral and intellectual differences.\nDiscuss ways to best meet the needs of children and families with\, or at risk for a genetic disorder.\nExplore opportunities to see each individual living with a genetic difference first and foremost as a human being with his/her own special needs\, rather than as a specific diagnosis/disease entity.\n\nThe Faculty Development Program will take place twice weekly on Wednesdays and repeated on Thursdays\, with one session each day from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. Both sessions will occur in the Nagle Auditorium. Lunch will be provided. \nThe sessions will also be simultaneously broadcast by Zoom. The goal in offering the same topic over two days is to maximize the opportunity for faculty to attend. One session will also be recorded and archived in NYU iLearn as a resource for NYU Dentistry faculty. \nUpon completing the session evaluation\, participants will receive one credit hour of Continuing Dental Education (CDE) for each FDP session in which they participate. \nThroughout the fall and spring semesters\, NYU Dentistry will provide FDP programming in five areas: \n\nTeaching\, Learning\, Assessment\, and Curriculum (TC)\nResearch\, Scholarship\, and Career Advancement (RS)\nLeadership and Management (LM)\nMaximizing Technology (MT)\nClinical Dentistry and Systemic Health (CD)\n\n

SUMMARY:FILM SCREENING: We Have a Voice & You Made Me Want to Smile Again
DESCRIPTION:We Have a Voice\nYou Made Me Want to Smile Again\nTwo short films about adults living with I/DD and the healthcare professionals who champion them. \nVirtual Screening and Q&A\nWednesday\, March 12 at 7 pm EST\n \n  \nFeaturing Dr. Dian Chin Kit-Wells\, President of the AADMD (American Academy of Medicine and Dentistry)\, and Paris Adams\, the AADMD Self Advocate of the Quarter. \n61 million US adults have some type of disability\, of which approximately 4.92 million individuals live with I/DD. Nearly half a million children with special healthcare needs become adults each year\, thereby leading to an increased number of adolescents and young adults moving from a child-centered medical system to a fractured\, adult healthcare world. \nIndividuals with I/DD are living longer than any such adults in prior generations. Lifelong developmental disability often requires various support needs\, especially with associated behavioral challenges\, communication limitations and complex health issues. It is therefore imperative that training for PCPs and health care providers in training is contextualized with the images and voices of the very community they need to serve. \nIndividuals with I/DD need to be presented in a positive\, person-centered way to the receiving end of the of the adult healthcare community\, so that they can both learn about the various conditions of their potential patients and see the human side; not just the diagnosis. \nAccording to Meelin Dian Chin Kit-Wells DDS\, Clinical Assistant Professor at Buffalo\, AADMD President: \n“It is so important to prioritize & prepare primary care clinicians (& clinicians-in-training) to care for our aging population of individuals with I/DD in communities of color. Far too many individuals experience misguided trust\, distrust\, closed doors to care\, elder neglect\, ageist attitudes\, ableism\, racism & discrimination which further widens the gap. The relationship with the provider is crucial. It should be natural. And many\, especially as we age\, find it easier to communicate with providers that have grown up in their community\, that may know the family or a family like theirs.” \n  \nThese films were made in collaboration with the AADMD\, and were made possible with the generous support of the WITH Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. \nImage Description: On a black background is the following text: “Positive Exposure Film Screening. Wednesday\, March 12\, 7pm EST. We Have a Voice Engelic and Paris\, Aging Adults Living with I/DD\, Share Their Stories with You Featuring AADMD’s Self Advocate of the Quarter\, Paris Adams. Screening Virtually. You Made Me Want to Smile Again. Our Healthcare Champions Devoted to Aging I/DD Communities of Color.” The poster contains two images; The first is a close-up portrait of a man wearing a blue shirt\, sunglasses\, and a black hat beside a woman wearing tinted glasses\, bright yellow earrings\, and a white baseball cap. Below is a still image of a woman seated on a couch\, smiling brightly and lifting her pointer finger.

SUMMARY:Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome Network\, Family Conference
DESCRIPTION:April 4th-6th 2025 in Uniondale\, New York\nRegistration for our 2025 NY Conference now open!\nFamilies affected by Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome gather each year for a conference. The HPS Network Conference is a place for families\, physicians and researchers with an interest in Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) from around the world to gather for fellowship\, education and fun. \nThis year’s conference will be held at the Long Island Marriott in Uniondale\, NY on April 4-6th. \nTo register for this year’s conference follow this link: Registration \nTo make a hotel reservation for the conference\, follow this link: Marriott Reservations \nA DRAFT Agenda for the conference is now available: 2025 Draft Agenda \nAn annual one day conference is also being held in Puerto Rico in 2025.  For more information on everything planned in Puerto Rico\, please visit our Puerto Rico events page \n\nWhat is HPS?\nHermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) is a genetic metabolic disorder\, characterized by albinism\, visual impairment\, and a platelet dysfunction that results in prolonged bleeding. \nSome people with HPS may develop other complications depending on the HPS gene involved; these include\, inflammatory bowel disease\, pulmonary fibrosis\, and kidney disease. \nCurrently there are 11 known types of HPS. The future might also reveal other unidentified HPS gene types. HPS can range from mild with few symptoms to very severe and disabling. Since HPS is an autosomal recessive disorder\, both parents must be carriers of the abnormal gene. \nHermansky-Pudlak syndrome\, was discovered in Czechoslovakia in 1959\, in two patients cared for by Dr. Hermansky and Dr. Pudlak. It has since been identified in many nationalities around the world—however it is very prevalent among people of Puerto Rican descent\, due to a “Founders Effect” on that island.

SUMMARY:University of Louisville: Exhibition and Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Introductory Panel \nChange How You See\, See How You Change is a photography exhibition that redefines medicine as a deeply human experience. Created with local participants and University of Louisville health sciences students\, this portrait collection highlights the people behind the diagnoses—celebrating their joy\, strength\, and individuality. \nEach image tells a story\, reminding us that patients are more than their conditions—they are individuals with rich lives and identities. As you explore\, we invite you to reflect on the power of empathy in healthcare and the importance of truly seeing and understanding those we care for. \nIn partnership with POSITIVE EXPOSURE\, the University of Louisville Health Sciences Office of Health Equity and Engagement\, the KornhauserHealth Sciences Library\, and the School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics\, this exhibition underscores our shared human experiences.  \n
