SUMMARY:World Down Syndrome Day at the United Nations
DESCRIPTION:Positive Exposure to photograph the 15th World Down Syndrome Day Conference at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.\nWatch Online: The whole event will be streamed LIVE for you to watch from wherever you are. Note that there are different links for the morning and afternoon sessions. \n \nThe 2026 World Down Syndrome Day theme\, “Together Against Loneliness\,” focuses on raising awareness of how loneliness disproportionately affects people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities\, as well as their families. \nIt highlights that loneliness is not just an emotional feeling but a serious health issue that can lead to anxiety\, depression\, and physical harm\, often linked to social exclusion and stigma. \nThe campaign calls for real inclusion in schools\, workplaces\, and communities\, emphasizing that being present does not equate to being included or truly connected. It stresses that everyone – individuals\, families\, organizations\, schools\, employers\, and governments – has a role in creating welcoming spaces and meaningful relationships to help people feel they belong. \nUltimately\, the theme frames loneliness as a human rights issue\, urging collective action to turn the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities into concrete change that ends isolation and promotes full participation in society. \nDown syndrome occurs when an individual has an extra partial (or whole) copy of chromosome 21. It is not yet know why this syndrome occurs\, but Down syndrome has always been a part of the human condition. It exists in all regions across the globe and commonly results in variable effects on learning styles\, physical characteristics and health. \nAdequate access to health care\, to early intervention programmes\, and to inclusive education\, as well as appropriate research\, are vital to the growth and development of the individual. \nIn December 2011\, the General Assembly declared 21 March as World Down Syndrome Day (A/RES/66/149). The General Assembly decided\, with effect from 2012\, to observe World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March each year. In order to raise public awareness of Down syndrome\, the General Assembly invites all Member States\, relevant organizations of the United Nations system and other international organizations\, as well as civil society\, including non-governmental organizations and the private sector\, to observe World Down Syndrome Day in an appropriate manner. \nOn March 19 and 21\, there will be a number of events at the United Nations in Geneva to mark World Down Syndrome Day.

SUMMARY:Unfiltered Signal: Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 16th\, 5-8pm\nUnfiltered Signal explores neurodiversity through raw abstraction and fragmented figuration\, transforming lived experience into visual language.\nScott Hovis II is not only an artist — he’s an activist raising awareness about the power of creativity in helping with mental and physical struggles. His abstract art is his way of making “beauty through pain.” Hovis lives with Tourette Syndrome (TS)\, a condition of the nervous system. While it’s most well known for symptoms causing involuntary word repetition\, it can also cause twitches and ticks. \n \n \nImage Descriptions: \n\nA poster reads: “Positive Exposure Gallery. Unfiltered Signal. Opening Saturday\, May 16\, 5-8pm 83 Maiden Lane\, 4th Floor\, NYC. An exhibition and discussion celebrating Art\, Humanity\, and Advocacy In recognition of Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month: May 15 – June 15.” The art featured is called “The Weight of Wakefulness (2025).” As a young man intuitively cranes his neck to the left\, chin raised\, droplets of blood spurt out. It is as though every voluntary movement of his posterior and anterior neck muscles inflicts anguish\, which provokes a loss of consciousness.\nSimilar to “Weight of Wakefulness\,” the young man self-inflicts pain with every twitch of his neck muscle. However\, his mind swerves in the opposite direction.

SUMMARY:The Neurodiverse City: NY Design Trust for Public Space
DESCRIPTION:As part of NYC Design Week (May 12-20)\, we are thrilled to host this NYCxDESIGN exhibition\, featuring prototypes of sensory interventions and the release of a new publication on neuro-inclusive design and policy recommendations for a more accessible city.\nRSVP Here!\n \nGuided by site-specific sensory audits and design workshops in partnership with AHRC NYC\, The Neurodiverse City tested a neuroinclusive design prototype created by WIP at a privately-owned public space in the Financial District that aimed to\, as the New York Times put it\, “transform one small patch of the hectic Wall Street area into an experiential refuge for neurodivergent New Yorkers.” Participants were able to test new design elements\, meet project partners\, and offer feedback about how to make New York more accessible. Working with NYC Public Schools and playground audits\, Verona Carpenter Architects debuted a Sensory Playscape at PS42m\, transforming a concrete schoolyard into a flexible ‘garden’ with mobile sensory zones. \nThe Neurodiverse City has been relocated to The POSITIVE EXPOSURE Gallery since November 2025.  \n\n\n\n\n\nAdaptive Design Association (ADA) reimagines everyday tools with care and creativity—crafting personalized adaptive furniture\, utensils\, tools and equipment for disabled people of all ages. Each piece is made in-house and delivered with the intention of removing barriers to access\, whether financial\, logistical\, or systemic\, so that participation is not limited by circumstance. \nAdaptive Design Association also has an installation at the gallery featuring samples of their innovative\, creative and life changing designs. \n\n\n\n\n\nImage Description Alt-Text: “Publication Launch and Reception. The Neurodiverse City\, led by Design Trust for Public Space\, Verona Carpenter Architects\, WIP collaborative\, and a network of disability advocates is reimagining New York City’s public spaces to better support neurodivergence.
