The NEW Center for Persons with Disabilities
POSITIVE EXPOSURE virtual presentation: 5:30 – 7:30 pm
The Care Center for Persons with Disabilities is a one-of-a-kind enterprise dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with all forms of disability. World-wide, people of all ages live with physical or intellectual disabilities either developmental or acquired as they age. Their quality of life is lower by virtue of the lack of well-trained dental practitioners as well as a shortage of facilities capable of delivering necessary care.
Approximately 3,500-square-feet on the second floor of the School’s Robert Schattner Center has been allocated to create the Center, a space that is specifically designed for patients with disabilities. The Personalized Care Suite, the patient care portion of the Center, features 12 operatories, all of which accommodate wheelchairs. There is also a room outfitted with hover dental chairs and at least one room accommodates patients on a gurney. In addition, a stimulation room with low lighting and sound baffling will serve patients with sensory sensitivities. All students will gain direct experience treating patients in the Center and will be expertly trained to handle the unique needs of people with sensory impairments, behavioral problems, psychosocial issues, and other conditions requiring sensitive and comprehensive handling.
