Visual Voices: Art of the Spectrum celebrates Autism Abilities through the works of four renowned extraordinary artists. Each artist transforms the canvas into a dialogue of color and texture that shapes how they make sense of the world. Explore and connect with these works that inspire thoughtfulness and emotional well-being through bold colors, abstract images, embedded comments, and cultural landscapes.
The opening event will feature a presentation by Dr. Martinez on the connection between creativity and autism. She will explore the distinction between autism and savantism, highlighting their unique features. Dr. Martinez will showcase the diverse skill areas found in savantism and introduce the remarkable artistic talents of individuals on the autism spectrum.
Dr. Martinez is the President and founder of Strokes of Genius, Inc., a non-profit organization that empowers the artistic voices of neurodivergent individuals, aiming to increase understanding and acceptance of the autistic community worldwide.
Dr. Martinez curates exhibitions in the United States and beyond that feature the art of autistic savants. She has worked with world-renowned artists: Donna Williams, Stephen Wiltshire, George Widener, Gregory Blackstock, Ping Lian Yeak, and many others, including the engineering genius Temple Grandin, to create awareness and exposure of their abilities. Dr. Martinez is a retired Dean from D.75, as well as an author. She has taught education courses at the College of Staten Island, Long Island University, Touro University, Hunter College, and the University of Michigan.
