Happy Moebius Awareness Day
By: Kelsey
‘–Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day is TOMORROW!! I have a full day of media/speaking engagements to mark the day.
This is not for me. This day isn’t for me at all. I am aware of Moebius. I am aware of the stares, the comments, the misconceptions. This day is about getting out there and educating, inspiring and sparking conversations. This day is about making this city, this province, this country a better place for all. It’s about inclusion and advocacy. It’s about showing society that we look different, yes, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to treat us different or have misconceptions about us based on looks. It’s about telling people what Moebius is and what it isn’t. It’s about telling society to not judge based on appearance, ever because appearances are deceiving.
This day takes me back to SAIT, when my amazing friends helped me pull off the most amazing awareness day event in my second year. It takes me back to the University of Calgary when again, my amazing friends and peers helped me pull off an amazing event. Gord, one of the top/best news anchors in this city (if not country) took time out of his day to come to the U of C to help me spread the awareness. Like how beyond ridiculously amazing is that? I am SO thankful for all of the amazing people in my life. People are texting me and emailing me about how amazing tomorrow is going to be for me, and how well they know I will do. Again, this isn’t about me. It’s all in the name of awareness and making society better. This isn’t about me, but damn am I grateful for the amazing opportunities that are coming my way tomorrow. I hope I really succeed in getting Moebius awareness out to this city.
Everyone please tune in to Global Calgary tomorrow around 8:10 AM! I will be live on the morning show. Also, everyone PLEASE wear purple again this year! Post a photo on Facebook, tag me if you want, and explain why you are wearing the colour purple.
Thank you all. From the bottom of my heart, I am truly grateful for this purpose/path in life.
