Rare Disorders Week

Happy Rare Disease Week! I have oculocutaneous albinism type 4, which is one of the even more rare forms of already rare albinism. 😉 It causes a lack of melanin in the skin, hair, and eyes. This creates visual impairments and a higher possibility of skin cancer. My vision is extremely good for someone with albinism, especially for how little pigment I have, even though compared to normally sighted people I don’t see very well. I also see double due to my eye muscles being uneven, even after 4 eye muscle surgeries. I’ve really gotten involved with the albinism community in the last couple of years, and I’m hoping to go to my first in person conference this July if I can save up enough money! I’ve made some great friends with albinism and have set up meet ups in MN for people with Albinism as well! Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to share about rare disorders! Zebras are the symbol for rare diseases because sometimes if you hear hoofbeats it’s NOT a horse… it’s a zebra. 🦓
